Canadian store uses anti-US ad to sell televisions

Just when you were starting to run out of reasons to curse the Canadians, they give you one:

[pic]

The ad is from easyhome and features the slogan ‘Even BS Looks Good On A 52″ HD LCD TV’ in front of (what appears to be) a cookie-cutter American politician.

Honestly, can you really argue with it?

P.S.  I love my Canadian readers.  I was just joshin’ with ya.

Canada Sends Deserter Home

The first American Deserter of the Iraq War has been sent home as of Tuesday in a move that many find surprising given that roughly 200 men and women have found refuge in our neighbor to the north since the war began in 2003.

Most Canadians have no issue with deserters, what with Canada not having backed the war in the first place, but with it’s current conservative government in place the rules about who qualifies for asylum in the country have changed greatly since, say, the days that Bill Clinton went running for the border, thus making it more difficult for those seeking a safe refuge from further deployments to war.

The man has been arrested and while the charge of desertion can carry penalties up to and including death by firing squad (no, really), it’s suspected that prison and something much like a felony charge will be his penance.

Perhaps the most surprising fact in this story, isn’t so much Canada turning away someone seeking asylum, but the face that roughly 200 men and women packed up their lives and left the all-volunteer military of the U.S. to run into the north and start over, rather than stay in the States locked into their contracts.

Who Does America Love (And Hate) The Most

In a recent Gallup World Affairs survey, Americans were asked to evaluate 22 countries and rate their approval of them.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Canada took the cake. Sure we give those canucks a hard time (ehhh!) but at a whopping 92% (!!) approval rating, it’s a shock we haven’t all jumped the border. I suppose it all comes down to who Americans feel threatened by. Whether that threat is economical or militaristic, Canada hasn’t been either for us. Although at the rate the dollar is plummeting, we may feel a little more competitive with our hockey loving neighbors by next year’s poll.

Most impressive is Israel (not shown) who clocked in with the fifth highest approval rating at 71%.  Shall I bother commenting on those countries who lack American approval? (Iraq, Palestine, N. Korea, and Iran)

Here’s some stats for all you geeks out there (i.e. me):

  • Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq are all viewed more favorably by Republicans than by Democrats.
  • France, Mexico, China, Venezuela, and Cuba are all viewed more favorably by Democrats than by Republicans.
  • Two of the starkest demographic distinctions in survey ratings are age differences in perceptions of Russia and China. About 6 in 10 young adults (those aged 18 to 34) have a favorable view of these countries, compared with no more than half of middle-aged adults and only about a third of those 55 and older.
  • Younger adults are also more likely than those 55 and older to have favorable views of France, Egypt, Mexico, Kenya, Venezuela, Cuba, the Palestinian Authority, North Korea, and Iran.
