Notes and scribbles during the Presidential Debate

I had a note pad out while I was watching the debates and here’s my little observations from while the debate was playing out.

1- new economic plans. mccain, breaks for oldies, cut loss on stocks. obama, breaks for mid class.
mccain- americans are angry, they’re angry, they’re angry, they’re angry (drinking game?) short term fix- “fannie and freddie mae” reverse decline of home ownership, 750bil$, take part to give it out to get people to keep their home.
obama- worst crisis since depression, bailout=1st step, rescue package for mid class. end tax breaks for overseas jobs, tax credit for domestic, mid class tax cut ira access in crisis without high charge, against buying mortgages on full price because they could be worth less now.
mccain- obama’s plan would hurt indy business owners- american dream. put them in higher tax bracket. joe the plumber- next joe sixpack? (sorry- THIS will be the drinking game)
obama- mccain is misinformed about tax plan. his break helps the mid class and 95% of americans out there. additional tax breaks to indy bus owners
mccain- obama=class warfare
obama- the rich can afford to pay it, right now the mid class need the break
mccain- high bus tax makes american bus leave to other countries

2- deficit record high trillion $s soon. each candidate will add 200 bil$ on top of that. what will you cut back?

obama- we live beyond our means, every increase/equal decrease from elsewhere, invest in health care now, less needed for medicare medicaid in the future, invest in energy now, less needed for oil later.
mccain- increase home values= increase of wealth, need nuke power, off shore drilling, spending freeze, obama= earmarks
obamaearmarks=.05% of spending mccain=bush

3- can budget be balanced in 4 years?

mccain- yes, and mccain doesn’t = bush. if he wanted to run against bush he should’ve run 4 years ago. “I can do it, we can do it” (fix the budget), when has obama ever stood up to the leaders of his party?
obama- gives 3 small examples of standing up to party, on core economic issues mccain has supported bush, has differed in some things, but not economics
mccain- “I have the scars to prove it”- standing up to party leaders

4- campaign high road, is each candidate willing to say things to each other’s faces?

mccain- obama turned down offers for townhall meetings, regrets neg aspect of both campaigns, obama has spent more $ on neg ads than anyone in history, obama lied about public funding for campain after becoming nominee
obama- 2/3s of people think mccain neg, 1/3 think obama neg, poll from nbc, campaigns have avoided issues to focus on attacks
mccain- cheap pander about local sports team, ads against mccain’s heath care policies etc
obama- sen lewis made statements that he was frightened by mccain rally crowd behaviors, obama had nothing to do with it and didn’t agree with how it was compared to anti-civil rights movements
mccain- supporters are the most dedicated patriotic people in the country
obama- all parties need to learn to work together, need to disagree without being disagreeable
mccain- obama’s past needs to be looked into
obama- ayers has become mccain’s #1 focus, gives ayers’s history and history on how he came to know him through the school reform board, ayers is not in any way associated with obama’s campaign. involvement with ACORN- worked to install voting registration in dmvs, gives list of people he works with and would surround himself in his presidency, mccain focusing on ayers shows state of mccain’s campaign
mccain- reitterates acusations

5- cabinets? and would vp be better prez than other’s vp?

obama- biden has amazing credentials, recognizes working class having been there, talks about tax plans
mccain- palin is a role model to women, a reformer, negotiated with oil to lower costs, sweep out cronyism, understands special needs families, united the party

6- is she qualified?

obama- she’s excited their base, work for special needs is commendable, that work would need funding which wouldn’t happen if spending freeze happens
6a- is biden qualified?

mccain- he has disagreement on foreign policy issues, obama always says we need to spend more and raise taxes

-moderater break off-

7- specific number for reduction on foreign oil?

mccain- eliminate all but canada, obama reneging nafta pissed off canada, nuke is fine and safe- nuke subs example,
obama- in 10 years we can end having to import oil, must end borrowing from china to give to saudi arabia, oil companies “use ‘em or lose ‘em” on land that’s not being drilled, nafta- believe in fair trade, but nafta is a bad deal needs provisions for labor protection environ protection
mccain- snipe at obama’s eloquence, free trade- columbia free trade is a no-brainer
obama- *phone call, sorry, missed a portion here*
mccain- obama doesn’t want positive free trade, but will sit down to talk with terrorists, obama= raise taxes and restrict trade

8- favor controlling health care costs?

obama- yes, one of campaigns big issues, outlines details of health care plan, if have health care- you’re fine, if not- buy into plans like obama and mccain get as public officials, learn to manage chronic health problems and work on preventative medicine to decrease health costs in the future
mccain- $5k tax credit, back to joe the plumber, would have to pay a fine
obama- wrong, small bus wouldn’t have to pay a fine, just big bus, higher premiums are because of the uninsured, mccain plan less healthy people won’t be able to get health coverage for $5k and would end up being taxed on the tax credit
mccain- joe again, repeats last statements,
obama- under mccain strong risk of losing employer based health care

9- repeal roe v/ wade could nominate a judge to supreme court who disagrees?

mccain- nominees should be based on qualifications not moral litmus test, supporting roe v wade wouldn’t fit into qualifications
obama- abortion is difficult issues, women should have right to make that decision, would make nominations based on qualifications and connection to current culture, brings up equal pay issue that came up recently
mccain- need to change culture of america and pro-life people recognize this, obama has record of voting for extremes
obama- voted against a bill when there was one already in place, is against late term abortions as long as a provision is there for protection of mother’s wellbeing, rather than focus on abortion, focus on preventing unintended pregnancies and increase proper sex education
mccain- pro-adoption

10- education, U.S. spends most on ed, but shows lowest in competancy, what to do?

obama- invest in early childhood ed, need higher pay for teachers and increase focus on math and science, bring down costs of college, community service in exchange for scholarships, parents need to bring focus back to helping with ed
mccain- *sorry, phone again*

closing statments-

mccain- my friends, difficult times, need new direction, have a record of reform, need to make health care affordable, make education a focus, can you trust us, examine my record
obama- tough times, economic crisis, need to get away from policies and politics of past 8 years, brighter days ahead, need to invest, middle class increase, requires work and unity

So there you go, if you can make heads or tails out of the whole thing, congrats.  I’ll probably have more to say about it tomorrow after dwelling on it a bit.  So, you know, tune in again.
