What can you get for a dollar these days?

Truth be told- I don’t know what just a dollar will get you. Not a cup of coffee. Certainly not a sandwich. Not even a euro.

The fact of the matter is- things are looking bad with the forcast only looking worse. The American economy is declining, and as the word “recession” gets tried on and paraded around, the word “depression” is waiting in the shadows just around the corner.

Oil is going up-

Crude oil rose above $108 a barrel in New York to a record as investors purchased futures because the returns have outpaced those of financial markets.

Stocks are going down-

U.S. stocks fell for a third session on Monday, as investors dumped financial shares on fears of more credit losses and concerns that the U.S. economy may already be in recession.

And the “Hoovervilles” of the past may become the “Bushvilles” of tomorrow (or not)-

Last year in California alone, nearly one in 52 homes had a foreclosure notice nailed on the front door. In Nevada it was 3.4 per cent.

So what is the answer? Do we spend spend spend as the current administration tells us to whenever there is a crisis?
Do we pinch our pennies till juice comes out of them?

I think the reality of the situation is- we as a country, the people, the gov’t, everyone- need to learn to spend within our means, and stop seeking debt as a means to cope with needing the next bigger better. We need to start keeping our own yards clean, while also being educated about what is going on in the world around us (and more importantly, what those we put in power are doing in the world around us in our name, given that the only way a good democracy can work is if it’s led by those elected by an educated public, not one just interested in photogenics and soundbites). Of course, that’s just part of the major picture.

What is the complete fix? To be honest, I don’t know… but I hope we all find out before it’s too late to solve the problem.

So what would you do if you had the choice: 60,000 in 4 years or 33,000 right now?

    No time like the present.

There are already two Hoovervilles in the US currently. There are areas of regional depression. Someone needs to get their head out of their ass and admit we are in a recession that’s spiraling downwards towards depression. When I have to work 5 hours just to put 8 gal. of gas in my tank….
