Michelle Obama: Another Disillusioned Yuppy?

In a recent trip to Zanesville, Ohio, Michelle Obama sat and discussed the economic hardships women in America face. Some areas, such as central Ohio, have felt the pain of our nation’s economic slump harder than others. It’s an important mission she’s on here. It’s a mission that affects a majority of our country and is worth a second look.

She did a interesting job of associating her own challenges as a mother with a full time job, two growing children, and a husband who has, shall we say, an equally hectic schedule. She has a great low key relationship with these women. She really does appear to have a grasp on their ordeals.

But then she encouraged these women to stay out of corporate America and instead support degrees in nursing, teaching, and social work.

Degrees and Corporate America? What? These aren’t Chicago yuppies we’re talking to here, Mrs. Obama.

The women she addressed at the round table in Ohio hail from a county where median household incomes fall below state and national averages. Only 12% of the adults in this county have higher education degrees and 20% don’t even have high school degrees at all. How does this Princeton and Harvard Law School graduate compare? Quite frankly, she doesn’t.

Michelle Obama continued by saying:

“The salaries don’t keep up with the cost of paying off the debt, so you’re in your 40s, still paying off your debt at a time when you have to save for your kids,” she says.

“Barack and I were in that position,” she continues. “The only reason we’re not in that position is that Barack wrote two best-selling books… It was like Jack and his magic beans. But up until a few years ago, we were struggling to figure out how we would save for our kids.”

Mrs. Obama appears to be concerned for the daily financial strains these women have to endure. Perhaps she really is sincere in her concern. But let’s be realistic. Have you and Barack ever struggled to pay your mortgages every month? Car payments? Electric bills? Have you ever had to buy second hand clothes for your children? What about food? Screw saving money! What about putting gas in your car or doctors bills or utilities?

In 2006, the Chicago Tribune reported that Mrs. Obama’s compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she is a vice president for community affairs, jumped from $121,910 in 2004, just before her husband was elected to the Senate, to $316,962 in 2005, just after he took office. And that does not count the money Mrs. Obama receives from serving on corporate boards

Few things irk me more than the wealthy who tout equal financial struggles with the “commoners”. Me thinks those women in central Ohio have a few more worries on their plates, Mrs. Obama.

I appreciate your efforts to sympathize, but please take that hyocritical and unrealistic sympathy elsewhere. My favored candidates wife, be damned. You’re not fooling me one bit.
