An ad launching later this week takes notice of the war-monger words of Presidential hopeful, John McCain. Their spokesperson? A female veteran of the Iraq war.
It’s a stinger:
Transcript:
John McCain says it’s o.k. with him if the U.S. spent the next 1,000 years in Iraq.
That’s some commitment to the Iraqi people, Sen. McCain.
(picks up baby)
This is my little boy.
He was born a year after I came home from Iraq.
What kind of commitment are you making to him?
How about 1,000 years of affordable health care? or, 1,000 years of keeping America safe.
Can we afford that for my child Sen. McCain?
Or have you already promised to spend trillions in Baghdad?
Votevets.org’s website says their mission statement is to, “hold public officials accountable for their words and actions that impact America’s 21st century servicemembers; and fully support our men and women in uniform”.
And directly from the mouth of Votevets.org:
The ad features, for the first time, a female Iraq veteran and her small child. Rose Forrest served 12 months in Iraq, and gave birth to her little son, when she came home. In the ad, Rose challenges John McCain to tell the truth about what endless war means for her child, and all of our children. Senator McCain needs to give us some straight talk about how much endless war in Iraq is going to cost. We don’t have an endless pot of money, or an endless supply of troops and equipment.
[...]
We’re airing this ad in the hopes that Senator McCain finally gets honest with the American people. We’re putting it out there so that the media and power-brokers start to ask the same questions. Endless war in Iraq means drastic sacrifices for Americans in their everyday lives, and in terms of our own security.
Is it appealing too much to the tenderness of sending females to the sandbox? Is Americas collective guilty conscious ready to face the reality of women fighting alongside men?

It's interesting to think about the dynamic of the female role in this ad as well as the parent roll. Let's say it were a new father in this ad, would it have the same impact? We all know the answer to that is no.
The ad also brings up the always questioned but never really answered roll of money being spent to help other countries, while so little attention is paid to the issues right here in our own country.
I know from my own experience that we were giving free no-strings health care to the Iraqi people, so why can't we afford to do the same for our own people?

"so why can’t we afford to do the same for our own people?"
Because the reality is that pleasing us is not as beneficial to political leaders as it is winning the favor of other countries leaders. To be honest, no matter how mad we get, no matter how many freedoms are taken from us, no matter how much we shake our fists like a crabby old men, until everyone at once decides to take "action" and not speak words…no one will listen.
Btw, I'm NOT advocating getting militant against our government, I'm just suggesting that bitching is not the same as doing. I don't know, I wish I had the answers. Right now, my life sucks. Like many others I want to work (I'm a carpenter), but there IS NO WORK. I want a house for my wife and children, but no money, because no job…it's like the rhyme "there was an old lady who swallowed a fly…". It's a catch 22 for many of us, a vicious circle, just compounding till we can't take it anymore. Has anyone tried to get Government assistance lately? Being made to feel like a poverty ridden bum is NOT FUN…and THAT'S if you even qualify for what you're trying to get! Someone explain to me why most aid is determined by your gross income? I'm told I make too much money, maybe 3 months ago I did alright, but not now. No, now I find difficulty to make ends meet. I do it, but it's hard. It's the same story for many Americans. Most of us don't have healthcare, I'm about to lose mine…BUT HEY!! I can always opt for "cobra" insurance…it only costs $1500 a month for my family, but when your not working…how the hell do you afford that? The whole systems screwy…and yet, everyone else seems to be getting taken care of off the backs of us…just doesn't seem very right. Sure, take care of others, but make sure you can take care of yourself first.

Chris - I feel your pain which is exactly why I was moved by the above message regarding the McCain campaign. Our Government tends to take on too much of the world's burdens and not enough of our own.
I hope things start to pick up for you and your family. Perhaps will start to see some positive changes in the system after we've gotten a President in office? For starters, throwing away that shitty COBRA plan and working towards universal healthcare.

…was home on leave…Grace looks up at me and says, "Mommy, NO more Army." Not going to leave that little angel again because McCain wants to COLONIZE Iraq. She's still pissed about it…she had a message for Bush too, "You can't take my mommy away from me again. She doesn't need to play Army that long, she needs to be home with me!!" Now, being gone for roughly a year and a half of her life, I agree. She wins.
