The Aftermath Of Bush In Israel

After three days, Bush leaves Israel on Air Force One to Kuwait; the country his father defended during our generations first bloody introduction to the Middle East. What has G.W.B left in his wake after a whirlwind tour of the Holy Land? A lot of inconclusive words with little hint of any actual solution.

“I carry with me a message of optimism about the possibilities of a peace treaty,” Bush said with the two Israeli leaders. “I will share with them my thoughts about you and President Abbas and the determination to work to see whether or not it’s possible to come up with a peace treaty.”

The nascent peace talks haven’t made much headway, with old disputes about land and terrorism clouding the negotiators’ early meetings. U.S. officials say Bush and his aides will be back to check up on the progress from here, and goad both sides.

But apparently, “He’ll be back” to check up on our Middle Eastern ally, Israel, and her neighbor, Palestine, in May. Quite frankly, it appears that his visit only caused shrugs from the Palestinians and debt for the Israelis. This Middle Eastern tour seems to be more an effort of Bush trying to save face than to save the perpetual ruin that is Middle Eastern politics.
