Stop looking, cause it’s not printed there. San Francisco has approved a city I.D. card that doesn’t include the owner’s gender. So far it’s been (understandably) popular amongst the transgender crowd. But will it catch on with individuals who identify with their birth gender? Maybe. I think the better question is to consider how useful a city I.D. card is in the first place. That’s what the less genderly ambiguous want to know.
We have a state I.D. to drive our cars. Federal passports to travel the world. Military I.D.’s to fight for our country. Go on and try to sell me another I.D. to cram into my wallet. (Sorry AMEX, gotta make some room.)
Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who introduced the measure, says illegal immigrants will benefit most. They will be able to open bank accounts and use the card for city services such as checking out library books.
So immigrants will be able to check out ESL books from the library easier. You gotta sell it a little harder than that.
City departments must accept the ID, except where state or federal law requires otherwise. That could include federally funded programs such as Medicare, says Pilar Schiavo, an aide to Ammiano.
Essentially this means that when I’m paying for my parking ticket, the city department must accept the city card as a valid form of identification. That is, unless I have my state I.D. I can use that too. Or my federal passport. That’ll work also. But I can’t use it for anything federally funded.
What was the point of city issued I.D.’s again?
