Talks of a meeting to negotiate peace between Israel and Palestine in Annapolis, Maryland have been surfacing for a month now. It was secretive and very unconfirmed by any of the three governments. That is until Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice hinted at it occurring before the end of this year. Now that the cats out of the bag, each player is aflutter with new tidbits of information about the meeting goals and timetable.
Here’s the newest accord:
“The three parties today - the American and the Israeli and the Palestinian sides - are all insisting we reach a solution before the end of Mr. Bush’s term in office,” Abbas said.
I wonder to myself what the motivation is for insisting on this particular timetable. Is it the fear of an unknown President who may possibly change our countries Middle Eastern policies? Are they concerned there may be a sudden shift of American troops out of Iraq and back to… um… their own country? Maybe they feel compassion towards the embarrassment that is our American President and want to send him off with at least one gold star?
I’d like to think that’s it’s just an arbitrary timetable to help get their negotiating asses into gear. But of course, nothing is ever as it seems.
