Top Democrats Propose War Surtax

Before you start booing and cursing the Dems who brought this to light, consider what it’s communicating. The Bush administration is requesting an additional $190 billion to cover the costs of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It would essentially come in the form of federal borrowing (debt just like you and I have) and the receipt would be thrown on top of the already monumental national debt ($9.06 trillion, as of posting).

What are the alternatives?

The measure — sponsored by Obey, Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pennsylvania, and Jim McGovern, D-Massachusetts — would require low- and middle-income taxpayers to add 2 percent to their tax bill, while higher-income taxpayers would add 12 to 15 percent, Obey said.

This is a way for the Dems to make us perk up a bit more. If they threaten to hit us in our wallets then our ears are naturally tuned in. If we don’t support the war… don’t support the tax… don’t support a draft or our mounting national debt, then now is the time to voice it. Our country is tired of being in debt. Aren’t you too?

In reality, will the tax happen? I doubt it. But here’s a GOP reaction:

“Raiding every taxpayer’s wallet for the purposes of playing politics with our national security amounts to one of the most irresponsible proposals I’ve seen in a long, long time,” House Minority Leader John Boehner said in a statement. “It’s time for Democrats to support our troops and the strategy that has led them to make undeniable progress in Iraq.”

An irresponsible proposal. Maybe. But while we’re on the subject of irresponsibility, shall I count the ways?
