“George Bush doesn’t care about black people!”- Kanye West, Sept. 2005.
…and apparently they don’t think too highly of him either. Or the administration, the war in Iraq, the handling of certain quote inspiring natural disasters, etc…
It’s most telling in the numbers. Since 2000, 58% fewer African-Americans have enlisted in the military.
The Boston Globe reports:
The decline in enlistment applications among blacks is by far the fastest of any demographic group. Between fiscal 2000 and 2005, white applicants declined by more than 10 percent. Hispanic applicants dropped by almost 7 percent.
The unpopular Iraq war is the biggest reason, according to military analysts, Pentagon surveys, and interviews with young African-Americans. But they say mistrust of the Bush administration is adding to the problem - along with the notion that black soldiers are being steered to combat jobs, a lingering perception from the Vietnam War.
Nathaniel Daley, a 28 year old from New Jersey explains his reasons for not enlisting:
“Why would we go over there and help them [Iraqis], when [the US government] can’t help us over here?” he said, referring to the cleanup after Katrina.
Makes you wonder if the blurtings out of a notorious ranter and complainer who’s known for inane banter rang a little truer to the pulse of the people than many thought. Or, perhaps- helped to inspire the sentiment. Not that much help was needed I’m sure.

hum…can you name a popular war? None come to mind, believe it or not Republicans do not like war.
Off hand I'd say the decline in enlistments (if true) could be attributed by the fact that as a majority, blacks and hispanics vote Democrat, and prior to 9/11 the military was OK with most as a means of getting an education or vocation, most did not think they would actually go to war.
The National Guard is a prime example. Without a war, the guard was fine to get money for a few days to play soldier each year, many never actually felt they would end up in a war zone.
As far as Kanye West, no he is still just as much an idiot as he was when he made that rediculous statement.
Prior to Hurricane Katrina striking, a whole lot of people with the intelligence let beforehand. Remember all the school buses underwater in New Orleans? Mayor Ray Nagin was the immediate villian reference Katrina, those that did not have the means should have been provided that means via the buses prior to the strike. You know other states get hit by hurricanes almost yearly, the difference between them and Katrina is that of the local and state governements are always first in response and assistance, the Federal Government is usually the third in line, with the local and state being the primary care providers. New Orleans, and the State of La. dropped the ball on Katrina.
Just how much intelligence does it take to know if you live below sea level and a hurricane with the force Katrina had was barrelling down on you, that maybe you should get the hell out of Dodge?
